Apple has been fighting jailbreakers (hackers) since a long time now. They have rolled out multiple firmware updates, bootrom / baseband tweaks and what not to restrict the hacking. Apple also tried its bit to legally prove that jailbreaking is illegal and was fighting a case against the same. But the verdict is now out and hackers can rejoice.
Just announced is the news that U.S. copyright law does not prohibit users from altering/moding smartphone OS so they can run 3rd-party applications that haven’t been approved by the original manufacturer.
The official response from Apple is quite expected and warns about warranty:
“As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.”
Now since its officially legal to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone, we can expect the Dev team and other hackers to work with some more freedom and the fear of an Apple / AT&T lawsuit goes down significantly. So the million$ question now is: will this ensure that we see jailbreaking / unlock tools rolling out any faster?
PS: we have said in the past that the security that AppStore apps provide cant come in Cydia apps. So there is more risk in using 3rd party apps. But then having spent some time in US with AT&T and being a iPhone user in India where my carrier isn’t lucky to have an iPhone (and no number portability either) – I have no option!
